Engine Room Resource Management - ERM

PURPOSE
Human factors account for approximately 80% of all accidents. The principal aim of this course is to reduce the risk of accidents at sea with focus on casualty prevention and human error, but also increasing operational uptime and utilizing redundancy.
We put focus on and in some extend train the officers to handle dynamically escalating situations in a simulator emphasizing the need to apply this learning in real life situations. The participants are provided with tools to improve teamwork, communication, decision-making and resource management.

CONTENT
Human factors, how the ships safe and efficient operation is affected by the individual behaviour and the interaction in the team are addressed through theory classes and practical cases.

to backup/illustrate the theory
 Engine-room resource management as required by STCW 2010, Sections A-III/1 and A-III/2
 Observations and feedback given by participants' own colleagues are processed.

The course is conducted as interplay between theoretical presentations and supervised training in a Full Mission Engine Room Simulator. Depending on the experience of the participants, the exercises can be conducted on a variety of plants and machinery, aligned to the experience of the trainee.

OBJECTIVES
 Provide participants with the theory behind above contents adding case studies and
exercises.
 Use an engine simulator to show the theory in real life, and to allow easy adaption into
daily operations.
 Train the officers in cooperation, coordination of tasks and deployment of resources in
stressed and aggravated situations.
 Train officers to exercise task in accordance with relevant procedures and check lists.
 Make participants aware of the areas of responsibility and of working situations with
regards to watch keeping.
 Stress the participants to get them out of their comfort zone and into their growth zone
stretching their social and physical comfort and achieve maximum learning.
 Teach the participants how to observe and give proper feedback to their colleagues after
every simulator exercise using the CRM theory and principles.
 Make the engine team work as one team.
