Dynamic Positioning (DP) Position Reference Systems

PURPOSE
To obtain knowledge in practical use, limitation and restriction of Position Reference Systems for Dynamic Positioning. Accepting Authority is the Nautical Institute, London.

CONTENT
 Practical knowledge of planning, conducting and executing the use and selection of position
reference systems for different DP operations
 Differential GPS/GLONASS:
The participants will acquire general information of the different types of DGPS systems
and they will learn how to configure and operate the systems. Further they will learn basic
maintenance and troubleshooting. External system interface for receiving differential and
ionosphere corrections is explained and the participants will further perform exercises
both on simulators and live equipment
 Hydro acoustic: HPR and HiPAP ®:
The participants will acquire basic background knowledge about Hydro Acoustic Position
Reference (HPR) principles and how to perform Super Short Base Line (SSBL) positioning and
Long Base Line (LBL) positioning. They will further perform basic SSBL and LBL system
operations at their own demo computer with standard APOS software
 Fanbeam ® MDL / RADIUS ® :
The participants will acquire basic background knowledge about Fanbeam® and Radius ®
principles and how to perform setup of the system. They will further perform Fanbeam®
system operation at their own demo computer with standard Fanbeam® software and exercise on
live Radius ® equipment
 Light Taut Wire:
The participants will acquire basic background knowledge about LTW principles and learn how
to operate the system. They will further obtain knowledge regarding maintenance and
limitations of the system
 Outline of the current national and international rules and regulations
 The optimal use and limitations of various position reference systems

OBJECTIVES
 To provide training in position reference systems for DP Systems
 To apply the required theoretical knowledge in the use of different position reference
systems for DP Systems
 To apply the practical training in the use of different position reference systems for DP
Systems by means of both live and simulation equipment

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Competence as watch-keeping deck officer with at least one tour of duty on a Dynamic Positioning (DP) operated vessel and have worked in positions where basic knowledge about DP operations has been obtained.
