Anchor Handling Simulation

PURPOSE
The purpose of this course is to enhance safety in anchor handling operations by making the participants aware of hazards and pitfalls and by giving them a thorough understanding of both theory and practice in anchor handling and winch operations.

• GOMO guidelines
• Vryhof anchor manual
• Bruce anchor manual
• Planning and risk assessment of anchor handling operations
• Vessel layout
• Winch operation, functions and layout
• Winch calculation and capacity
• Correct and safe use of Shark jaws (Triplex and Karm Fork)
• Anchor systems
• Running and retrieving anchors
• Training of communication and teamwork between:
• commanding officer and winch operator
• Bridge and rig
• Bridge and deck
• Ship handling, problem solving and decision making

The course is conducted as interplay between theoretical presentations and case studies and supervised training in a Full Mission Anchor Handling Simulator to backup / illustrate theory and make it easily transferable to anchor handling operations.

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course the participant will have:

• Knowledge of and ability to explain industrial procedures in rig move operations
• Knowledge of and ability to plan and conduct risk assessment of anchor handling
operations
• Knowledge of basic winch operations and use of winch computers
• Knowledge of and the ability to give examples of safe winch handling and problem
solving
• Knowledge of and ability to describe anchor system calculations
• Knowledge of and ability to explain safe use of Triplex shark jaws and karm forks
• Knowledge of and ability to describe how to run and retrieve an anchor with PCP
• Knowledge of and ability to give examples of correct communication
• Knowledge of and ability to give examples of proper and safe ship handling and
decision making

None

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Participants must have competence as watch-keeping deck or engine officer, and have fulfilled at least one of the bridge duties onboard an anchor handling vessel and have experience from at least one anchor handling operation.

NOTES
Each simulator exercise will be followed up by a debriefing.
